Are animals put on earth to serve humans?

This is an age old question where theology and humans conflict with one another. The Word of God does not mention treatment of animals extensively. Some say human attitudes towards animals come from the Bible. In Genesis 1, we find creation of all things that includes humans, animals and others. Also, the Bible doesn’t use the word “soul” for both animals and humans. Humans are unique and they can sense the right from the wrong distinguishing themselves from animals. Followers created a hierarchy that humans are above animals and therefore, they are entitled to use them any way they like. But that doesn’t give the right to humans to torment animals.

Animal rights advocates think humans and animals are equal. However, Christians believe that humans are unique and made in the image of God. They argue that humans possess attributes such as language and use of tools that set them apart from animals.

Even if we believe that humans are above animals, one should not neglect to care for animals. As the scripture says, animals are created to serve man but it doesn’t give them the right to cause pain by harsh treatment or cruelty towards animals.
