In Hawaii, pets are banned from riding on operator’s lap while travelling in a vehicle.  In Connecticut, if an unleashed pet interfere with driving, the driver can be cited for distracted driving.  In Arizona, it is against the law to allow a pet to ride in the bed of a truck.  The New Jersey state assembly has introduced new legislation that requires drivers to secure cats and dogs with a harness if they are not riding in a crate.  The proponents of the law are also proposing a $25 fine for violation that would go up to $1,000 and a pet cruelty charge.  If the bill passes, New Jersey will be the first in the U.S. to require a pet restraint device for travelling pets in a vehicle.

Is New Jersey over reacting to a non-issue?  Pet safety while riding in a vehicle is critical to most.  But many think that there are other pressing societal issues that need to be dealt with at this time.  Some argue that this is overregulation and display too much control by the government.  Some even argue that it is a form of animal cruelty to restrain a pet while travelling in an automobile.
